• To empower and minimise the trauma of abused women and children through safety and specialised support.
• To promote public awareness of gender-based violence and the
socioeconomic structures that underpin it in order to overcome violence against women and children. Because gender-based violence is connected to high rates of HIV/AIDS, we also work toward the reduction of the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Namibia.
• To help build the capacity of Namibian shelters for abused women and children and to promote information sharing, networking, and
cooperation between organisations that fight gender-based violence.

A Little About Us
ESDA/ Friendly Haven is a shelter for battered women and children seeking refuge from an abusive environment. The only one of its kind in Namibia, it was established in 1996 as a project of the Ecumenical Social Diaconate Action (ESDA). Friendly Haven Shelter can accommodate up to 18 women and children.
Friendly Haven is thrilled to be opening its first satellite office, a place where anyone can come for safety and advice about gender-based violence and abuse.
We are in the process of envisioning and organising this new space to make it the best it can be. This is a big project, and we are looking for volunteers to help us set up and staff this healing environment.
